Darkest Dungeon II

Red Hook rebuilt Darkest Dungeon as a roguelite road trip instead of a long campaign, and three years later the review corpus still splits almost exactly down that line — not a launch controversy that faded, but a genre identity change some fans never made peace with.

Dark Fantasy Tower Defense

A mazing tower defense that plays like a lost Warcraft 3 custom map brought back with online co-op and a roguelite layer, whose launch-week control complaints and thin tower roster have both been substantially addressed by one of the most active post-launch patch cadences this library has documented.

Dream Tactics

A GBA-styled tactics RPG with a genuinely inventive card-based skill system, held in very high regard by a large audience, with real and specific complaints about mid-game combat bloat, a punishing reverse difficulty curve and an unusual lack of a traditional auto-save.

Farthest Frontier

A medieval survival city builder from the makers of Grim Dawn that spent three years building the deepest farming and disease system in the genre, then left Early Access in October 2025 to a Very Positive Steam rating and a still-vocal minority saying the milestone patch didn't fix what was wrong with it.

Graphite

A pencil-drawn tactics RPG where combat plays out on a shared timeline both sides can sabotage, off to a strong start on a tiny early sample and a distinctive hook, with a controller gap and an unproven long game keeping the verdict cautious three days after launch.

Greywind's Legacy

A solo-developer, text-only ASCII RPG that closed a disciplined ten-week Early Access run with a genuinely huge 1.0 patch — 328 skills levelled by doing, 190 classes across seven tiers reached through evolve-or-merge choices, and a NZ$7.89 price with no ads, no microtransactions and no sound at all.

Jagged Alliance 3

The first genuine successor to a beloved 1999 tactics classic in over two decades — a competent, often very good mercenary squad RPG that a vocal share of the original's veteran fanbase says simplified too much of what made Jagged Alliance 2 legendary.

Journey to Incrementalia

A NZ$7.39 solo-developed incremental auto-battler about a necromancer smashing 99 walls — Very Positive across 911 reviews, and honest about being "Active Incremental" even though Steam's own Idler tag oversells how passive it is. The build freedom the store promises is real, but a full-respec-only skill tree with no saved loadouts turns a lot of that freedom into manual busywork, and the solo developer's patch trail goes quiet in May 2025.

Kenshi

A squad-based open-world RPG with no main quest, no level cap on how far you can fall, and an engine that has been fighting its own interface since a Steam Early Access launch in March 2013 — five and a half years before the "release date" most storefronts show. Its systemic freedom is genuinely unmatched; its performance and UI never caught up to the ambition.

Liquidation

A classic Warcraft III-and-StarCraft-flavoured RTS from a solo developer who spent three to five years building it with a community of beta testers before MicroProse stepped in to publish its Early Access launch — and reviewer after reviewer reaches for the exact same comparison to describe it.

MENACE

Overhype Studios' turn-based tactical RPG follow-up to the beloved Battle Brothers trades its predecessor's medieval mercenary band for a strike force fighting an unknown threat on a lawless sci-fi frontier — Very Positive on Steam and widely praised as a genuinely fresh spin on the XCOM formula, held back by a specific, restrictive supply system and timed-mission design that fans and critics alike agree feels at odds with careful tactical play.

Monster Train

A vertical, three-floor twist on the deckbuilding roguelike that Slay the Spire built, still sitting Overwhelmingly Positive on Steam more than five years after launch — and still worth playing on its own terms, even with the numbers showing exactly where its late-game balance stops holding up.

Path of Achra

A dark-fantasy roguelike where you spend an hour designing a character and about eight minutes watching them win — 98% positive, and its critics and its store page agree on exactly what it is.

Path of Idle: Old Gods Rising

A Lovecraftian idle RPG that spent months as a well-loved free demo before its 12 August 2026 launch -- an auto-battling, town-building, gear-crafting incremental that early buyers call one of the deepest idle games in years, with a real complaint underneath the praise about a stat and customisation system that gets overwhelming fast.

Prelude Dark Pain

A Seville studio's debut tactical RPG that looks like Darkest Dungeon and plays like Final Fantasy Tactics — two battle points a turn, a board that fights back, and one act of a campaign that has another year of building to do.

Re:Night

A Kickstarter-funded tactics/deckbuilding roguelike that launched to a small, entirely non-English review sample — this review translated and read all fourteen of them in full to find a genuinely praised elemental-tactics system with one sharp, specific complaint about shop RNG.
