Sandustry

A falling-sand physics factory game — every grain, drop and spark is a simulated resource — that went into Early Access on 13 August 2026 to a near-unanimous reception, backed by Hooded Horse and pre-release press comparing it to Factorio, Terraria and Noita all at once.

shapez 2

A pure factory-automation puzzle stripped of combat, scarcity and even failure, where the only opponent is a shape's own geometry. The tightest version of this genre's core loop yet built, and a useful test of what's left once every source of friction is removed.

SpaceChem

The game that started a genre, fifteen years old, and the lowest-rated of the seven engineering puzzlers in this library — which turns out to say more about being first than about being worst.

Space Haven

A tile-by-tile spaceship colony sim where you build the hull, route the gas pipes, and keep a crew of civilians fed, breathing, and sane while you search a procedural galaxy for a new home. Reached 1.0 in May 2026 after six years in Early Access.

THE LONGING

A game whose central mechanic is a 400-day countdown that runs whether you play or not — the most literal treatment of idle time anyone has attempted, and it's 92.3% positive six years on.

Tied to the Beat

A survivors-like roguelike that reads the lyrics of any MP3 you import and turns each word into a battlefield effect — reviewed on a complete, unanimously positive 22-review sample from a solo developer's first days in Early Access.

Torchlight II

A 2012 answer to Diablo III's always-online auction house, built by former Blizzard North designers — and still worth playing today largely because of the mod scene that kept extending it after Runic Games itself closed down.

Total War Warhammer II

A widely loved grand-strategy classic whose negative sample documents a real 2018 spyware scandal, persistent Denuvo/always-online friction, and a heavily criticised DLC structure requiring ownership of a separate game to access its best campaign mode — a complaint Creative Assembly substantially resolved in December 2025 by giving Warhammer III free to owners.

Trombone Champ

A viral internet joke that turned out to hide a genuinely inventive rhythm game underneath — you slide a mouse to actually play the melody rather than just hitting notes on a track — backed by more than three years of sustained free updates that answered its players' biggest requests one at a time.

Unnamed Space Idle

A solo developer's sci-fi idle game with over ten interlocking systems and players who have logged thousands of hours apiece. The reception is Very Positive, and the one recurring complaint is that late-game progress stops rewarding curiosity and starts demanding one correct answer.

WorldBox - God Simulator

A god-game sandbox where civilizations of humans, orcs, elves and dwarves grow, fight and collapse almost entirely on their own while you throw lightning, plagues and dragons at them. Nearly five years into Steam Early Access, it's still one of the most purely enjoyable toyboxes in PC gaming — as long as you never expected it to have an ending.

7 Days to Die

A voxel zombie survival game built entirely around a scheduled siege that arrives on a known clock and gets worse every time. Eleven years in Early Access ended in July 2024 — the core loop is still one of the smartest in the genre, but the years show in how it looks, runs and argues with its own community about what it used to be.

A HERO AND A GARDEN

A NZ$7.39 visual novel dressed up as a clicker game from npckc, in which a hero who fails to rescue the princess spends two-odd hours making amends by growing magic berries — Very Positive at 95% of 79 reviews for its storybook art, warm cast and unusually deep accessibility options, with the one consistent complaint being that the "clicker" half thins out into repetitive quota-grinding by the later routes.

Albion Online

A classless sandbox MMORPG where every sword, ship and set of plate armour is player-made — and where losing a fight in the wrong zone means losing all of it. Nine years in, and now on Xbox, the question is whether that risk still teaches or just filters.

Astral Ascent

A Hades-and-Dead-Cells-flavoured roguelite metroidvania whose art, combat feel and hub writing draw strong praise for its opening hours, with a consistent, specific counter-argument that its meta-progression grows passive rather than build-defining once the difficulty ramps up.
