Fallout 76

Gaming's most famous redemption arc went into reverse — negative reviews fell to five in 2023, then spiked to thirty-one in 2025, and the players writing them have two thousand hours each and one complaint: the subscription.

Neverwinter

A free-to-play Dungeons & Dragons action MMORPG that has survived thirteen years, two publisher rebrands and a 2025 management buyout on the strength of genuinely fun combat — and is now fighting its own cash shop for the loyalty of the veterans keeping it alive.

New World: Aeternum

Amazon's classless action MMORPG still has the best weapon-swap combat and the most convincing large-scale siege war it has ever shipped. None of that is why this review exists — New World: Aeternum was delisted from every storefront on 15 January 2026 and the servers go dark for good on 31 January 2027. Reviewed with the extended Nighthaven season live.

Star Trek Online

A sixteen-year-old free-to-play space MMO whose combat has genuinely few peers, and whose own negative Steam reviews come overwhelmingly from thousand-hour veterans turning against its lockbox monetisation rather than from players bouncing off it early.

Trove

A voxel-building MMO welded to an ARPG loot treadmill, still running eleven years after Trion Worlds made it and three community letters a month after gamigo took over. The question in 2026 isn't whether Trove survives — it clearly does — it's how much of it is still a game and how much is a storefront.

Torchlight III

The Torchlight series' return from a scrapped free-to-play MMO experiment landed as a slimmer, shallower action RPG than its beloved predecessor — and six years on, its Mixed Steam rating hasn't moved an inch, even as the studio that made it no longer exists.

Windbound

A gorgeous, Breath of the Wild-indebted survival roguelite about a shipwrecked warrior sailing between procedural islands — praised for its art and boat-building, undercut by a identity crisis between story, survival and permadeath that most players never resolve, since fewer than one in eleven ever finishes it.

Empire of Sin

A genuinely novel pitch — Prohibition-era Chicago as a hybrid of XCOM tactics and Civilization-style empire management — from Doom co-creator John Romero's studio, undone by a buggy, shallow launch and, three years later, an outright abandonment that left a paid, pre-purchased second expansion permanently unreleased.

SWORD ART ONLINE Alicization Lycoris

A licensed action RPG retelling Sword Art Online's Alicization arc, with combat fans genuinely like buried under launch-week performance problems, a slow first act that plays more like a visual novel than a game, and a gacha loot-box layer stacked on top of an already full-price purchase.

Godfall

A PS5 launch title that charged a premium at the dawn of the $70 console generation for a repetitive looter-slasher critics rated Weak — and one that, six years on, still requires an internet connection to play solo, from a studio that shut down in January 2025 with no offline mode ever announced.

The Relic: First Guardian

A Korean-myth action RPG built around a genuinely interesting idea — no levels, just relics, unique weapons and eighty tragic bosses — arrives with no PC graphics options, weak Metacritic scores on both platforms, and a pre-launch AI-art controversy the director says is fixed and plenty of players say they can still see.
